A snapshot of homespun Americana is asunder in Big Sky Country – sunshine, mountains, outdoor
activities, as the unique and tender relationship of a set of tightly bonded identical twin boys –
Mark and Alexander (Alex) Farley – endures the psychological and physical labors of self-realization
within their family unit.
Shot over a three year period Red Without Blue follows the lives of each sibling as they lurch into
adulthood and migrate towards opposite coasts. Alex, now living in New York as a woman named
Claire is taking small steps to transition into the body she wants as female. Apartment hunting
with his boyfriend in San Francisco, Mark attends art school but misses having a brother.
Juxtaposing photographs and first person narratives the twins and their parents candidly narrate
their struggle to reconnect and redefine each other. While Mark and Claire have diverged
physically; they are both anchored in their moment of birth as identical twins. While the once
comforting similarities strain their relationship to a tenuous uncertainty, each one sees in the
reflection of the other what they like and dislike in themselves. Winner of the Audience Award for
Best Documentary Feature at the recent Slamdance film festival, Red Without Blue is beautifully
shot and narrated. Mark and Claire emerge as unique individuals with an unshakeable sense of
themselves regardless of the gender and sexual choices they have both made.
